Discuss Pay from agencies in the Business Related area at ElectriciansForums.net

I don't like working for agencies, I had a bad experience with one in South London , doing a pub, quite a big job. Second fix was done 80% and they paid us 8 k.

Iconnect it was the engineer who filled our timesheet in and he did put it on separate sheets. Well you usually get a list of about four pay companies. The main contractor running the job at the time enforced that the agency were only allowed to use one payment provider! You will find that if you start with another agency 99% of the time they don't use the same payment provider you had before.

Every agency I have worked for have a few approved companies and we used to deal with our own time sheets. The reason I asked as it happened to a mate he did the extra day on a different sheet and same happened lol Why is the main contractror calling the shots sign of the times I think? I have worked for many agencies over the years but to be fair have not done much for a good while

I just can't wait to start an apprenticeship. Only good thing working for agencies is the various skills and experience I am gaining. All this weird pay is gonna do my head in as I'm only doing 2 days next week due to bank holidays and having Wednesday off anyhow

Start our own LTD company and get registered with HMRC for CIS. These leeches cant refuse to pay then. They only want you to use their payco's for the backhander.
The only good thing about an agency is getting paid every week, end of.

Start up as Ltd company - ÂŁ70 or so
Insurance - ÂŁ200 (probably payable by instalments btw)
VAT registration - Free ? (may be wrong here, but flat rate VAT = charge at 20%, pay VAT to HMRC @ 14% so 6% profit from that)
Cost of books and accountant - ÂŁ1k per year.

All figures are off the top of my head guestimates, so dont jump on me for getting them wrong. The main thing is that your 1k a year (ÂŁ20 per week lol) will be going to an accountant rather than these shady tax avoidance scamsters.

I would rather do it that way than to go down the pay you company route. Was paid through I-paye last year on a net of tax job last year and I am bricking myself should the tax paid abroad be less than HMRC are expecting for the period.

Incidentally, I was using Bedouin also until 2009 who operate as an "Employee Benefit Trust", their deal was that you receive min wage for your salary, the rest of your money is a "loan" which they charge you 6% apr for. Net result is typically 85% of your money in your pocket. The downside is that you end up losing some of your personal allowance from HMRC. Mine is now 384L or something similar. Bedouin do a deal whereby if you recommend anyone you receive 1% of their invoices ! which is probably the sort of deal the guy on site has with the payment agencies.

One of the problems with having a Ltd company, is the amount of forms that need to be filled out and issued.
First off you have to supply companies house with accounts each year, and pay them to submit them, I think it's ÂŁ15.
You then have to submit accounts in an approved manner to the coporation tax people.
Then ther'es the PAYE/CIS payments department, which will want you to submit yearly accounts. They will also expect you to pay any PAYE/CIS deductions you have taken every tree months, or declare that the deductions have been offset due to deductions made by the agencies.
You have to register as a contractor with the CIS, and then submit a form to them listing the people you have paid, and how much tax you have deducted every month.
If you fail to do any of these things by the due dates, you will then be fined.
Payment companies that offer to sort out your tax etc. are talking rubbish.
If you use them for one week, how are they going to work out your tax for the rest of the year, especially if you've used other payment companies that will also sort out your tax for you?
Your best bet is to find the cheapest payment company, and try to stick with them.
Sterling charge about ÂŁ23 per payment, Fairgate ÂŁ15.

Well said and spot on,these parasites ought to have their days numbered, and I did hear that it may actually happen, if the EU gives temp workers the same rights as on the books staff
Good riddance to these leeches who prey upon our industry and get a good living off the backs of you sparks who work hard for your pennies

They can take a blow torch to the knackers of them all as far as I'm concerned. Agencies were a good thing once but are now little more than the parasites that they've become.

Shylock would be proud of these scumbags - explains why the use of agencies is so common now, when an employer is getting back handers from the agency. And people go on about the corruption in Africa!!! This makes me want to really really hurt someone.

Even with the trouble of accounts, paye, coorporation tax and VAT, you are still much better off.

Register for VAT and sign up to the flat rate VAT scheme. Basically you charge VAT at 20% on all contracts, and pay 14% to HMRC. At 30k a year that makes 6% of the total in your pocket (ÂŁ1800). That is more than enough money to cover the setup and running costs of your business as a limited company.

Ken, do not class Bedouin as an agency, they deal with your payments and payments alone. Any contract they have is as a middle man between yourself and the client. Legal tax minimisation is what they do. It is close to the bone tax avoidance, but above all other things it is legal (or was when I was using it). If I were to recommend yourself to them, then the 1% cut I receive comes from their slice, not your own. So basically if I can get 10 people on 60k a year to use them, then I earn ÂŁ6k a year on top of my own invoices.

And before people start off on tax dodging etc, go have a look at UK Uncuts website. Ther reckoning is ÂŁ85 Billion could be raised per year by getting to grips with the tax that big business presently does not pay its due on.
