I am a qualified electrician looking to go alone but I currently only have my 16th edition. I am willing to do my 17th but the course is £500 and with trying to support a family on my own as well as paying bills £500 is alot in one month. Does anyone know a good course provider who will let me break the payment down into monthly payments?

Hi Brightspark. Skillworks funding at 50% is still available till october in many areas ---contact your local chamber of commerce--No in YP

I checked out skillworks, but there websites date back to the good old days of funding in 2007, mainly based in mersetside, don't think they operate these days, although there still on the net!:)

I paid about 70-80 pounds for exam only at Guilford college. It was full exam, not update.
Hope, it will save your money.

I was on the verge of paying £480 for a 3 day course starting 20th September at Stow College until I got a call to go offshore Friday. To my mind it is an absolute rip off, and a sum of money that I grudge paying. When I did the 16th edition back when it first came out I paid something like £84 for a 6 evening course at Cardonald college in Glasgow.

Now I know we have inflation to consider, but for the life of me I cannot see the justification for at least a 4 fold rise in the cost of this (taking into account Stow is somewhat more expensive than other colleges and it does include the exam and book). The upgrade course is not an option, because I did the course before the amendments came in, and hence I need to do the full course.

This on top of Norwegian / UK offshore survivals and CompEx refresher every 4 years as well as a medical every 2 years, the safety passport every 2-3 years is getting beyond a joke. And that is before I even consider Inspection and Testing.

Why the hell should we have to pay such outrageous sums of money to continue in a trade that I have have been doing for 20 years plus - Wait I remember, the tehen AEEU as part of a wage deal agreed to the abolishment of the grandfather rule.

Did my 17th full exam at Doncaster College, exam only, £86. Update was approx £82. Studied at home with a practise simulator and saved loads of money :D

Wally, sounds like a better option to me. Guess I need to contact some local colleges.

Still leaves me the problem of getting a copy of the regs, but I suppose its something I really should have anyway. Even at that its still £150 all in.

Do you have a link to the practice simulator that you could possibly PM to me.
