ample current

Hi all
doing a job in a house and the client wants me to put a pendant in the bathroom, now the ceilings are quite high (2550) and i have some short 6" pendants so well outside of the zones. Do you think i should push the customer for a proper bathroom fitting or even use a batten holder.
Thanks

There's nothing in the regs that say you can't use a class II pendant light with a HMO skirt within a bathroom. However, IMO, it will look pretty basic and a little naff.

The fact that the client wants a pendant might be to make maintenance easier and that might lead to the possibility of using the edge of the bath as access to changing the lamp when it blows.

Who knows?

The reg regarding suitable for environment applies here and bathrooms can be heavy in moisture and steam, this will condense on the cold plastic flex and run into the top of the lampholder, a suitable bathroom fitting would be advised even when out of zone or a standard baton lampholder with skirt instead of a pendant drop will suffice at minimal cost...... also to think about is the pendant drop is extended down with the flex thus could have a lampholder within zone even though base is out of zone.

The regs say that you can fit a pendant or a baton because it is just out of the zone but you know you want to fit an IP rated fitting. Show them a few nice pictures of cheap fittings for less than ÂŁ20 and see if they will go for it. Its better than a ÂŁ2 pendant.

I would fit an ip rated fitting, because then there's less chance of steam condensing and causing nuisance tripping of the 30mA RCD
If the steam condensed on the wire as i already pointed out and run into the top of the lampholder it wouldn't effect the rcd as a standard pendant drop is 2wire (no earth) although ill agree with your advice.

Yes it may BtB but i would class this as functional tripping not nuisance tripping to which i commented on, and in reply to Hawk the moisture may have penetrated the base which may be the cause of the tripping in your case but unless you had a pendant like a brass one which has an earth then water in the lampholder on its own wouldn't trip the rcd until an earth path was introduced most likely by an unsuspecting homeowner.

I've always thought the zoning height is a stupid idea. At the end of the day, you install items which are suitable for the environment they will be in. Just because the fitting is outside the zones it still may not be suitable for the environment.

EDIT: blue to bits beat me to it!

There shouldn’t be height limits to zones. But the powers that be that make up the regs know best.
Any steam, and moisture in a bathroom is going to go up, whatever height the room is.

font in a cathedral,
room containing a bath or shower?

don't take me to seriously all the time!!
