So I don't need to get any additional qualification?

You don't need any additional qualifications, but if the poo was to hit the fan on a report that you did and you have to prove your competency, then the 2391 goes a rather long way to prove that!

The NICEIC will happily take a QS on with only the the 2382 (17th ed), but you'll then still have to prove you're competent....

uh huh.

Sorry pevs what is a QS??

I am elecsa as well not NIC. Elecsa guys can do PIRs though, right?

Sorry, qualified supervisor. The fella who has to sign off periodics and installation certs. I have absolutely no idea what the Elecsa way is, as I've only done NICEIC... But I've heard that they're pretty good.

Of course Elecsa guys can do it, I could do it myself without any quals or membership of a scheme if I so wished as there is no regulation. Not sure how many customers I would get though, but that's life!

P.S. Are the any Napit people out there, don't hear about them much?

Qualified supervisor :)

just got in there ;)

Yeah, what he said!! :D

Nah don't see many napits about. You'd have thought there'd be a few cos of the expense of setting up... never really looked into them, maybe they don't offer as much. Apparenty theres a fourth one as well, who I have never heard of.

I have given pennywise a thanks, but I think it was earned in a very underhanded way.

The only one I can find on the old interweb is BSI, which is odd as I've never heard of them running a competent persons scheme. They appear to have the benefit of having the Kitemark for their trademark, which you would have thought would be incredibly lucrative as everybody knows what it is, probably much much much more than even the NICEIC could ever dream of. I shall have to look into this a little bit more methinks....

He deserved it, as he was 4 minutes quicker than me! (that'll teach me for watching Marley & Me) :D

The thing that totally threw me on one PIR I conducted was lead sheathed twin and earth, or what looked like it. Didn't have the foggiest what it was!! :D

Not so much of it about now, ripped alot out on rewires in the late 70s and early 80's. I think it was installed in the 1920's / 30's

Normally it is twin rubber with the lead sheath used as earth. The socket / switch boxes had clamps fitted for earth continuity but I have also seen earth leads soldered to the sheath

Found this interesting link on cables

Historic Mains Cables - DIYWiki

Possibly useful for those inspecting older buildings

Now that's my kind of link! Cheers, :)

20/30's sounds about right, as it was a huge museum in Cardiff. When some cowboys rewired it they decided to connect all the nice new PVC onto VIR in barely accessible joint boxes.... I couldn't believe it when I saw it! All over the place too....
