Pi times radius squared I think :D

If your diameter is say 5mm then radius would be 2.5mm

Pi = 3.142
Radius = 2.5mm

so it would be 3.142 (Pi) x 6.25 (radius sqared ie 2.5 x 2.5) = 19.64mm squared

Or another easy way is 0.7854 x d^2 ie 0.7854 x 25 = 19.64mm squared

if you get a copy of spec.from cable manufacturers you could get a rough idea ,also you could be looking at wether it is metric or imperial

are you trying to find the core size from the od of the outside sheath,if so you would need to know if its a
2c /3c /4c and the voltage of cable ie.1100v / 3300v / 11000v,has it got a pvc sheath or a hessian sheath

yep, that would be correct.. Core size from a measurement of the overall diameter of the armoured.....
obtaining manufacturers data may prove difficult, the cables are PILS and pre-war, and the ends are terminated into pitch filled joints....

nothings ever easy!

you should be able to get a look at the cable ends even if you have to isolate cable to make safe,then give it your best guess?just to confuse things sometimes they use to install a 3 1/2c cable ie.reduced neutral.
out of curiosity why do you need to know the size?have you measured the od.yet

I have a project for the inspection and test of a large (and ancient) industrial site..... Just going round the sub-mains to label and ID everything, want fuse sizes, cable sizes, length of run and method of earthing... oh and there are reduced neutrals galore... which leads to my next Q. would the other phases have to be fuse to suite the N, i would expect so?

I have had some more info.....
A drawing with the cable sizes, imperial of course. 0.5x3.5.....
im aware that the 3.5 is 3phase and a reduced neautral.... but the 0.5 i assume is 1/2 inch diameter of the copper.... so in metric c.s.a = 3.142 x 12.7mm sqared:confused:
am i on the right lines here?

ive sussed it at last........
the 0.5 is inch squared......
so 0.5 x 25.4 x 25.4 = the metric equivilent ( about 300mm2)

thanks for the help everyone
