PIR is it satisfactory.?

With any type of post like this i can see both sides, jdd is quite right when you do a PIR you do it to current regs, but and dont ask me why, this board setup still comply's with BS7671, trouble is i havent got the information or knowledge to comment on it.

No, as most installations in the last twenty or so have rcd protection.
If you didn't assess / compare to the 17th where you draw the line. 15th edition compliant, 14th edition compliant. I hear this every so often and it always makes me smile.

you assess the installation according to current regs. just because it may not comply with these, does not make it " unsuitable for continued use".

I'm of the opinion, if it doesn't comply with todays regulations, doesn't necessarily mean its not safe!! Sometime a bit of common sense needs to be applied as well.

I agree, however the installation as described earlier will never pass a PIR. This is nothing to worry about, the smallest thing can make a PIR unsatisfactory. It is then down to the client on what they want to do.

I am a new member to this forum but I do have some experience in doing PIR's now known as EICR's.
Regulations and standards are not applied retrospective, so any installation previous to the current standards does not mean that they are now unsafe. The testing procedures are to current standards, which would mean that all codes given for non compliance will only reflect the changes in standards.
I did see that one poster above mentioned the word common sense, sadly this is missing with some reports I have had reason to assess.

Sorry to labour the point, but you do inspect and test the installation to the current edition of the regs. The best thing is not to get emotionally attached to the installation (lol) and worry about an unsatisfactory outcome.

bit of a vague question from the OP.
seems there's no need for me, as a testing engineer, to bother with the testing lark. i'll just get the client to describe the DB and earth sizes and i'll tell them satisfactory or not!!!!!!!

Unsatisfactory imho of;

NO RCD or CORRECT supplimentary bonding in bathroom (<0.05 ohm continuity between shower / lights / extraneous pipework)

NO rcd on shower (only if manufacturer instruction requires RCD)

Satisfactory if all tests OK, correct supp bond and sockets not liable to supply equipment outdoors (for example a dedicated labelled RCD for this purpose)
