Hi All,

Sorry I haven't been around for a while. I am almost at the end of my 2330 level 2 course, just my 205 next week. I have passed everything with distinctions so far and am not sure where to go from here.

I will be 38 this year and really cant afford to go working on a building site as a trainee as I cant afford to live on trainee wages. I have a successful window cleaning business and am making a good living at that but I need something to move into as I get older and also something which is less affected by the weather.

I was thinking of going for the 2330 level 3, but have been advised that if I dont want to work on site it would be quicker and less expensive to go for a competent persons Part P scheme and focus on domestic. Starting by doing jobs for my present cleaning customers. It seems that I can just do my 17th edition and a 2392 test and inspect course and then join a Part P scheme.

Is that true? I know a couple of electricians who would be willing to give me some jobs and sign them off for me to show to NICEIC or whichever body I choose to join. But this whole business is so confusing I'm really not sure what to do.
Has anyone else done this? I.e. gone domestic just on the basis of 2330 level 2 ? Or have you all done the level 3? What was your experience? What advice could you give me please?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Colin

A lot of guys have gone into "domestic" without even the level 2, just a 17th ed and a part p scam.

The industry is dead at the mo, with the world and his wife having done a "course" and gone into "domestic". If I were you I would stay on and do the level 3 as when you come out you will have so much more knowledge than the rest and will be able to look at other areas such as commercial.

If you're looking to make a fast buck it aint gonna appen, the industry is not what it was.

Hi Lenny.

Thanks for your comments. I'm not looking to make a fast buck. I want to have a skill that I can use to earn a fair living. I was hoping to take advantage of the skills I have learned on level 2 to earn some money.

I was just unsure as to whether level 3 was worth the extra effort and cash if I was only planning to work in domestic. I can see what you mean that level 3 will give me a more rounded knowledge and I am now considering it very seriously. I would still like to get part P registration though, if possible, so that I can work now, just doing minor works and the like for my cleaning customers. At least that way I could get some experience. Perhaps you can advise me as to what I need. Thanks Colin

I did the level 2 then 3 finishing about 4 years ago (when not working in the industry) I have since been working in the domestic / commercial sector for the past couple of years. I have in the past year done my 17 edition and 2391.

For what it's worth, the level 3 gave me a great insight into squirrel cage motors etc. how useful has this been ? Err, not.

If you're intending to work domestic, I wouldn't bother with the level 3. Get out there and learn the trade from 'time served' sparks. I've learnt more 'hands on' than I could ever learn at college. For me, the thing I've realised is to get the job actually done, what you've learnt at college is only a tiny part of the job. Techniques for running cables, understanding what 1950's sparks were doing and understanding how different types of houses are actually built (to know where to get a feed or get back to the board ) actually causes the greatest problems.

Must stop rambling and go to another thread where I can slag off the 'get rich quick' learn everything you need in 5 days for 15 grand brigade !
