Im currently working as a formwork carpenter. This game is finished for local blokes in my opinion and im looking for a new career and i have always regarded sparking as a better job. Im looking at the electrical game as my ticket to a solid job "job for life" even. Problem is im 30 and dont know how to get into the game. i see jobs in paper for electricians mates but id need experience and certificates. The bloke on the phone said i can get fully qualified in 5 months (full time i imagine). Is OLCI a good route?

I think thats a bit optimistic,
If you want to become a fully qualified electrician and I mean fully qualified I suggest you contact your local collage , you can get help for a recognised course , take a look through some of the posts regarding course such as the one your proposing

Hi mate. I did the olci route and worked for me. You don’t have to go to a local college to get fully qualified at all – I completed my NVQ3 with olci and have done a Part P and wiring regs courses as well, all city and guilds. Should suit you if you don’t mind carrying on in your old job for a while, you do the training practical part in several 2 or 3 day sessions. It took me more like 9-10 months though, so stuck at my old job during that part to keep some money coming in. Then you have to work on site to get your nvq – electricians mate jobs are good for that and you should have your 2330 level 3 by then so you’ll have some certificates to back you up. As I say, worked for me. Why don’t you visit their centre and see what you think, might give you more of an idea if you think it’ll suit you.

Fully qualified electrician in 9-10 months and not working as an electrician for all of the time that is good going well done.

It took me 5 years to complete a full appenticeship and get all my quals inc National Certificate I must be a slow learner

i'm doing the OLCI course at newcastle. Just completed my level 2 in 3 months. Starting my level 3 and hope to be done in a couple of months too! I study EVERY day at home and then go for my exams and practical assessments when I book them in. I will struggle with the NVQ 3 though as I'm not going to go out and get a job with a company as I have a little girl that I need to drop at parents house and pick up etc so being self employed again will suit me better. I am going to apply to NAPIT after passing my level 3 and part P though and will do my NVQ as and when I get the specific work in to do the portfolio.
