Evening all,

I have a little conundrum I need to get resolved.
I’ve moved an EV charger from a single phase board that was on a 40a breaker and no RCD protection, over to a different 3TP board, on a new 40a Type A RCBO (Single phase)

The customer is now reporting that the charger has a PME Error. “Ground Fault-PME Fault”

I’m a little confused as the system remains PME, nothing to do with the earthing arrangement has changed, unless I’ve missed something blatantly obvious… it should boot up as normal.

What I have noticed since doing some research is that the charger already has built in type A RCD protection. Maybe something on the upfront Type A doesn’t like it?

The charger is the ICS 7.2kw EV Charger

Many thanks.

I don’t know the ICS unit but in general, chargers will notice lack of earth and report an error, and some chargers have more than one earth terminal with one intended for PME and one for TT.

Time for some testing to check the basics, E.g loop test at source of circuit and at charger terminals.

Thanks Tim.
Charger manual indicates it doesn’t need a rod but I’ll be back there tomorrow regardless. I’ll update the thread incase anyone comes across the same issue with this charger.

To be clear I meant the terminals are either/or depending on earthing system.
As you say, it is supposed to work on PME and has built in open PEN protection.

Following on from @timhoward regarding testing the circuit
When you moved the circuit from single phase to three phase board what testing did you do and has it ever worked since it was moved or is it possibly a fault that only occurs when one particular EV tries to charge

Interesting. Did you ever resolve this?
