I'm seeing a fair few jobs advertised that state that you must have current "police pass/clearance" to apply. What exactly is this, and how do you go about getting it? Can't find sod all on google about it.

I assumed it was something similar to a CRB, thing is with those, you can't just apply and pay for your own can you, has to be done through your employer as far as i know, which is great when you don't have an employer to apply for one for you haha.
its a crb check, I had 2 done one for the fire service and 1 for virgin, you can pay yourself and have it done if you need, unfortunately its a case of someone asking you for something when they don,t know the correct name of it.happened to me at virgin, guy filling in form for me to sign and it said have you had crb before,i tell him yes but he ticks no.after a couple of weeks I get a call from crb asking if i knew someone has applied for a crb in my name as all details were same but no mention of me already holding advanced crb for fire service, guess they weren,t pleased after i explained as they sent crb back with a letter telling him to fill it in properly next time lol.
I'm glad you can so categorically state it's a CRB enhanced or otherwise, having worked in a few areas for the police and one of those government departments where you may come into contact with information that is of a sensitive nature the forms you fill in are a little bit more than a CRB and have questions relating to family members and whether you or any members of your family are members of any organisations that are considered dodgy and many more probing questions
I was refering to the normal requirement for working in non seure areas, schools, hospitals etc now if you were working in a military establishment then things such as the official secrets act may come into play.there was last time i filled one in a section where you had to name close relations and give their details so they could be checked,to see if you had what in police terms was called any known associates i.e people with a record which may give a potential employer a reason not to employ you eg your brother is a major bank robber.I'm glad you can so categorically state it's a CRB enhanced or otherwise, having worked in a few areas for the police and one of those government departments where you may come into contact with information that is of a sensitive nature the forms you fill in are a little bit more than a CRB and have questions relating to family members and whether you or any members of your family are members of any organisations that are considered dodgy and many more probing questions
the crb is basically what the police know about you,the home office one is different like you say,i done one a few years ago for unescorted access while working in naval yards,it went down to grandparents details, its amazing what a government knows about you and your family..dont know why they bother with forms..they know it anyway...
