I'm seeing a fair few jobs advertised that state that you must have current "police pass/clearance" to apply. What exactly is this, and how do you go about getting it? Can't find sod all on google about it.

Nope. Wrong.

Worked in custody suites via a third party over last 5 years, and they paid for me to be "police security vetted". Its done by warwickshire police, it takes ages, costs alot more than ÂŁ65 quid, and the form sounds rdmarkably like the one UNG refers to. Very detailed.

There is a higher level called "DV"- dilligent vetting. Thats really serious, interviews the lot. Thats usually for top secret stuff , GCHQ,MOD.

I've read on other UK electrical forums that companies are using these reports to check on there employee's criminal record (if any) Which in my book is totally wrong and yet another abuse of a procedure meant for a completly different purpose...

its another uk minefied e54,tho spent convictions should not be used against the person, tho no doubt they do,most applications these days you are asked about convictions spent or not, some people will lie, would you want a person convicted of theft working for a security co,would an employer want to send someone with convictions against woman to do a job in a womans home, say someone had a fight ehile out in town, they got arrested and charged,if that was 20 yr ago and they have had nothing since its fair to say its a one off and the guy isnt a violent lunatic, tho if the same guy is being arrested for the same thing over and over its fair to say he is a violent lunatic..the same with theft and many other crimes, companies should know who they are employing,

When obtaining one of these clearance certs for specific reason no problem. It's when they are abused by employees, for there own use so-to speak, then knowing information on your maybe distant past, that they really have no right to be privy too, that's the problem. Invariably it's going to be held against you, even to the point of being let go. As i say these things don't seem to have any safeguards to stop this sort of thing happening, so ends up just another abuse of a system that was put in place for quite different reasons....

some info for those who have done daft things when they were younger,me included,if your not an persisitant offender then dont worry,if you are,you dont deserve a job anyway..

The main point is, that an employee has no right whatsoever on knowing anything about your personal life. If a particular job/contract requires such a pass cert, fair enough, but it doesn't necessarily need an employer to know about anything you have done in the past, and as you say is now well and truly spent!! I'm sure there could be safeguards within the system to prevent this..

Hell, i've probably had more background checks on me than most here (some i didn't even know about at the time). I just wonder what would have happened if i'd had any kind of criminal record, no matter how small or how far back it was. Employers can be fickle to say the least about these things, it's human nature, ...and really in my opinion have no right to that information!!

well if i was ever in a postion to employ people who would represent my company id what all the info i could who i was employing,

So what right have you got on knowing about an employee's personal life then?? ...NONE!!!

E54, even if they were working with kids?

That over rules any rights as far as I'm concerned!

Kids come first.

Your missing the point i'm making!! If a place of work requires that you have a clearance to work in that environment, ...fine, absolutely no objection to that at all. But that clearance shouldn't be privy to your employer, only to the the official party that requires that clearance. your past and personal life has got sod all to do with your employer. I'm sure he wouldn't want his employees to know his past or personal life!!

Geezus, think about it for a moment here, you'll be opening a real can of worms if an employer had the right to your personal life before being hired. The chances are, there would be a section of perfectly law abiding people that wouldn't ever stand a chance of being employed because of some minor criminal offence(s) being committed when they were young enough not to know any better....

As far as I'm aware the only info the employer get's is a suitable or unsuitable for employment. If a check returns an unsuitable then the employer has no access to any further info as to why this decision was made
