Hi All

Friend of mine asked me to disconnect their house alarm as it wouldn't shut up (being going off all night, neighbours loved it!!). The alarm is never used so just wants disconnecting.

Disconnected back up battery and then went to disconnect it from the socket (not on a FCU, spurred direct from the nearest socket). To isolate the power to this socket, I had to isolate BOTH B32a MCBs labelled "Down Sockets" and "Up Sockets". Removed the cable, alarm now off.

I said I would go back and investigate this tonight, anyone give me a heads up before I get there? Never come across this before but am guessing it has something to do with the Lives crossed in the MCB's??

Thanks
Pete

never heard it myself, but would imagine it's that the 2 rfc cables (4 ends) have just been dogged into 2 breakers without identifying which is which.

Has the property been partially rewired?
As an example of what you may encounter:
A recent EICR revealed that the electrician employed by well known kitchen fitters had reconnected the new kitchen accessories in to what he probably thought were two adjacent ring drops (4 T+E cables) on the the old downstairs RFC. Unfortunately for the client he had mistakenly and effectively connected the out-going leg of the downstairs RFC to the out-going leg of the upstairs RFC and the in-coming leg of the downstairs RFC to the in-coming leg of upstairs RFC at a point in the far corner of the kitchen. Creating a large figure of eight hybrid 'RFC' with two MCBs, a neat booby trap for any unwary electrician at a later date. Both MCBs had to be switched OFF for the hybrid 'RFC' to be dead. If either MCB only was switched OFF the other MCB powered a pair of short and long live radials.:banghead: The EIC for the work was of course a total work of fiction. :cuss: The job was later corrected by us, reinstating the upstairs and downstairs RFCs and putting the kitchen on it's own RFC.
