Today to my horror......I payed my monthly visit to my nan's house, usually get bogged down having a cup of tea chat etc then it's time to go.....

Whilst she was on the phone I decided to have a little check of her electrics (as you do)!!

First of all she has a old wilex board, with a 1.5mm feeding her shower.....with no isolation switch, so straight from the board into the shower.....this was not the worst of it.....the cable has been cable tied to the cold water feed for the shower.....not to mention the cable is running infront of the tiles and clipped direct to the grout......I then had a look and there is no supplementary bonding whatsoever throughout the house.......then I check to see what system we have......Wait for it.....TT,

I asked when all this was done she said 20years ago, and some guy from out the paper done the shower about 10 years ago.........

Think it's time I rewired this place

Does anyone else have any horror storeys!

Why don't you do her a PIR then?

What is the wattage of the shower? Is this 1.5 not just supplying the pump to the shower?

What supplementary bonding would you expect to see 'throughout the house'?

Is there RCD protection 'up front' ?

That's my exact plan.....
Insulation resistance to see if cables are getting replace, new board but rcbo the circuits due to 4 circuits present, the shower is 7.5 kw didn't even look how far the run was as it's well not enough.....I have disconnected this already as she dosnt use it so sticking with her thermostatic one, so quite a fair bit to do, hoping no n-e faults if not doing rewire, judging by the garage it could be a dogs dinner under the floors......

make sure the shower is not a power shower. i got caught out with that the other week. looked just like an instantaneous 7kw shower till i took the front off. was only a 150watt motor, so 1.5mm.

My first thoughts exactly, you wouldn't get many showers running in excess of 30 Amps through a 1.5mm cable.

That's the thing it's not running, it virtually has the wrapper on it......my main concern about the shower is that she has the shower head of her thermostatic higher than the cable clipped direct to the tiles with no isolation of this......I will check on whether it was a pump one though.....I fitted one a few years back.....said 2.5mm on box done a cable calc and would take a 1.5mm so forgive me on that one, as I say it was only a quick flick about why she took a call.......then when I asked her she was adamant it being 7.5kw......anyway it's not used and I have pulled the fuse on this

Yer I was in my car so no test kit on me, I asked her to call E-on to see what chances of getting a tns or tncs supply.....we shall see

You asked your old Gran to call E.ON to request a PME supply?

I feel like I've spent more time on this 'job' than you have!

Haha!! ...Probably little old Granny would stand a better chance of getting E-on round and doing it at no cost (not that it should be chargeable anyway) if there is PME available for her!! ...lol!!!
