Hi Guys
House rewire - family is living there.
The owner has been let down by plasterers and obviously requires power and light and so at customers request I have installed all the socket tops and light switches but screwing back to the steel back boxes rather than the plasterboard which should be there.
I have also tested all the circuits and she wants the certificate.
I'm uneasy about the whole situation, particularly as I haven't been paid and am unlikely to do so until she gets the certificate. I understand I can't use the certificate as a bargaining chip anyway!
Some of the walls require skimming, which I can't see being done without removing the accessories from the wall, but I was told that was not my problem.

This has happened to me before with kitchens when the tiler comes in after I've been and gone.

What would you do?
Pete

Bit of a sticky situation! I would be feeling un-easy about this. Can the accessories be screwed up tight with the back box or not? If not IP rating may be compromised and may pose the risk of electric shock if kids are in the household?

I'd be suggesting a further payment against the works with the balance/certificate after you've been back to check the sockets etc have been refitted correctly.

Why the rush from the customer for the certificate?

EDIT: They would be mad to entrust the removal and replacement of all the sockets and switches to the plasterers!

could be worse, plumber might do it.

Without seeing it hard to say. What was agreed with the client about completion of works etc?

I think you could screw all the faces up tight, then squeeze some silicon or caulk in the cable entry gaps to seal everything. Then make a note on the certificate, and hand it over as payment is placed in your other hand.

and make sure you charge through the nose when you go back to dig the accessories out of the plaster.

Hi Pete, lots of good advise above, i used to be like you in the past, worrying about late payers and if i dont do the cert inwont get paid, well not anymore, tell the customer its simples, payment on completion of the cert, and all work and goods belong to you until paid for in full.

also ask them dos Asda let them take the shopping and pay next week?
