Hi all
In fitting a garden security light and want to start the install from a light switch.

I am looking to change the existing 1 gang internal light switch to a 2 gang.
The second I want to switch the security light on/off.

I am aware that I can take the power from the 1st internal light switch nut not sure on how this is wired between the 2?? Could anyone help? Ive seen this in other houses but my mind had gone blank!!

Many thanks.

Tyrone

It's likely that there will only be a switch line at the switch.
You will need to take a feed (Line & Neutral) from the nearest light fitting, to your security light and then run a separate switch line to the switch.

of course, otherwise if connecting up to a dual rcd board and you have 2 rcds and if lighting circuits split, one on each side, you will get the problem of "borrowed neutrals" and your rcd will trip once a load is drawn on that circuit :)

you may get lucky and find the switch has been 'fed' a neutral - it's still (not so common) practice; dependant on the application it can be the best plan sometimes. I have done it many a time.

Only way to find out is to test... I assume you have the equipment and knowledge to do this... ? If not, bite the bullet and get a sparky in ;)

If I am teaching you to suck eggs apologies. But suspect not from question.

Thanks for all your replies guys!
The solution of taking the three line from the ceiling rose to the security light, then to the switch was my initial idea but I Thought I had seen it originate from a switch.. Maybe not then! lol

Thanks!

Just as an aside I assume you know that this work is notifiable under Part P

"It works" and "it's safe" are not necessarily the same thing. With DIY work, they are often far from the same thing.

I guess the easiest way would be to run a supply from ignition /aux via a relay that drops the supply when the lights are on.

Actually it would, pretty much all smart switches are 1 gang size. Cheers.
