I was changing an extractor fan today and while I was there noticed the set-up he had for his shed: 2 x s/o + 1 fluorescent light via a junction box in the shed, what looks like 2.5mm SWA down the small garden into a box on the outside of the house then through into the living room to a 13A RCD plug plugged into a living room socket.

I wanted to tell him that it all seemed a bit of a bodge but couldn't think of what was actually unsafe about it. Any ideas what I could say to him next time I see him (assuming that 'it doesn't seem right' won't make the grade)?

Thanks.

Although this thread has been somewhat of a fail for myself. For what its worth tel, if that was my job i'd be doing option 3 with 3core 2.5 SWA and obviouslly just a bit of 2.5mm t+e from the socket to the fcu.

the 13A is the bugbear though. now the reason for fusung down is that a single 2.5mm requires a lower OCPD than the RFC, as it can only safely carry circa 27A or less id derated. now if a spur was in 4mm, that will carry 32A, so i can see no reason for not installing an unfused spur in 4mm.

Option 5. 20A Isolator in house, 2 way board in shed, 16A for sockets, 6A for lights??

though of that, but client will not be pleased to see that behind his LCD TV, which is the only viable place to tap off the RFC. would need to be a isolator and MCB there. unless i fitted them outside in an IP rated enclosure. that's a trhought.

A typical domestic shed or garage is fine with a 13A fused feed. Just advise the customer not to use large power tools with a 3kW fan heater on at the same time. Probably worth asking him what he needs the power for.

Dear oh dear oh dear lol
fri nite madness has started.

well all the right elements are there , 13a fuse for cable , rcd in plug , swa cable , isolation
its just not put together like a pro would.
doesnt mean its unsafe , and the owner probably doesnt give a crap about the asthetics either.
hes probably made up at his pucker electrical handywork lol.
