Hi, can anybody help. I've had dumped on me loads of extras on a job I'm on in a Hampshire farm cottage. Its all suddenly gone from one ceiling pendant in each room to 37. ALso the number of socket outlets has increased considerably. Can someone tell me a rule of thumb price for installing downlighters and extra sockets. I thought £50 per socket and £45 for each downlight, complete. Half the property is a rewire and the other is up and down extension. Any help appreciated.

Depends on the client, being domestic they may get the hump at paying like that, remember most homeowners will have a quick count up at how much you made on them, maybe time and materials would be better but its up to you to suss the customer out

defo dont price it on time and materials as that normally opens a can of worms on how long you actually 'worked for' lunch breaks and trips to the wholesaler etc etc. its well and good at the begining of a job...but when it gets a bit stressy at the end...you really dont need to be explaining your working hours and your day rate to the client... how much per day??! etc etc

if its not too late...AGREE with the client a fixed price for the complete job based on your prices which are pretty accurate...if they have a problem with your quote being too high then they really have no clue about how much elec work costs and they are expecting you to work for peanuts. you can always knock your total down a little bit if you really want the job. If you work this way...you can work at your own pace without the client watching the clock and everyones happy.

price everything per item... sockets, switches, lights, downlighters, runs back to the dist. board, smoke detectors, consumer unit etc etc.

What I was trying to get at is if you have say 10 downlights in a room, depending on the particular install method etc you could do that in 2 hours, now most downlights are less than a tenner a kit so if you are pricing them individualy at £45 thats a profit of £350 for 2 hours, I agree with Truth though make sure which ever way you do it agree a price up front
