Problem with lights

P

pburley

Hi guys. just after some ideas on this one, had a quick look at a job today, some down lights in an extension not working. They are 240 volts gu10's, four downlights, when I pop out the lights I cant see anything in ceiling space, lights are on same fuse has ring (32 A MCB) cant find any fused spers, non of the sockets have a spur off. with fuse on I have no lights working but have 240 volts in both legs at switch (weather switch is on or off) and voltage at all lights but there do not come on (and yes I checked the bulbs). Any ideas guys. Many thanks Pete.

have you lost the neutral? what is worrying is you say they are on ring main with no sign of fusing down. if you can't find a 5A FCU, then either be prepared for a big job or walk away.

Hi will pop back tomorrow and have another look. Cant believe there's not a fusing down. Extension was built about two years ago so should be good to reg's (famous last words). Really dont want to start ripping ceiling down looking for joint boxes etc.

Voltage at all lights?..230v L-N?.....probably not as they dont work....what was the voltage at the lights and where did you test..L-N or L-E?

sounds very much like a missing neutral. if you got 230v L/E and either 0v or silly volts L/N. then neutral lost
