Hi there,

I have recently moved into a new build terraced house and am experiencing some challenges with my electricity supply that I am hoping that someone might be able to help with.

The problem is that there are regular surges/spikes in the supply across all (I think) circuits. This manifests itself in all the ceiling lights in the house flickering intermitently, around every 3-5 minutes, aswell as lights plugged into wall sockets. I have no evidence that his is effecting other electrical items in the house but assume as it is seen in lamps plugged into wall sockets it is simply that spikes are not enough to be seen in TV's etc.

I have had an electrician in to look at the consumer side and he said that there was no problem with the breaker box or outside meter, he also checked all the connections in the box. He indicated that this could be a supply problem and as such I called out Southern Electric who did some further tests on the meter box outside. He did a voltage test and said that everything appeared normal.

The only suggestion he had was that he would recommend that a voltage logger be installed for a couple of weeks, he did also however mention that this would not be for 4-5 weeks due to shortage in supply of these devices.

Where practical I have everything behind a surge protecter I am a little concerned about the damage this could be causing to other devices. Also there is the simple annoyance of the lights/lamps flickering so often!!

Any ideas on what the problem could be? Or other routes I could take to get this fixed?

Thanks

Is it all the lights in the house, sounds like you have a loose connection somewhere. If it's a new build you will probably find J/Bs under the floor somewhere

Hi,

Yes it is all lights and sockets in the house. Would the loose connection not have to be somewhere in the breaker box for it to be affecting all circuits?

You said you had an electrician round to look at the board and he said everything was ok.I take it your house is still under the builders warranty.Get them to sort it.Bit it definitely sounds like you have a loose connection.Have you asked your neighbours to see if they have the same problem,if they have it could well be a sub-main fault outside. If not,the fault is definitely in the house:)

it may be worth checking not only your neighbour but also a few houses along as the usually split them on differnet phases, could be one phase from the substation playing up.
