hi,

just wondered how many of you guys ever have problems with plasterers.

i am still new to the industry(finished my 2330 level 3, regs, part p etc in the summer) and have been helping a mates girlfriend with her first house. like she has basically gutted the place and had new heating system and bathroom extra lights and sockets fitted, and most of the place replastered.

there have been quite a few trades around the place whilst i have been doing my stuff to it and i have got on with the other guys like the plumbers and tilers fine. but the plasterer, i don't know if it is just me or if plasterers and sparks generally don't get on.

is there any of the trades sparks don't generally get on with?

You will find that barely any trade get on with us, after all most other trades are just idiots with their brains knocked out. :D:D

Seriously years ago most building contracts was done under one contractor, so they would have brickies, plasrerers, labourers, chippies even all working for the same company and so know each other.

The plumbers and sparkies were a law unto themselves as they never worked under the general building foreman, so you would get us having an extra 10 minutes at a break, or knocking off early and it did build a little resentment. And with tongue not so in cheek some builders and such are not the sharpest tool in the box.

It's changed now with most people being subbies, but still think old habits die hard in our trade. Most likely you just got a ..........well you know what I mean. I always found having a wee in the plaster barrel made me feel better ;)

Plasterers get p'd at sparks for not tying back their wires, sparks get p'd at plasterers for filling in thier flush boxes. It's a love to hate relationship. lol. I have done work as a decorator and got p'd at plasterers, work as a plasterer and got p'd at sparks. Now I'm studying to be a spark to p em all off ;)

was just thinking i should solve the problem and practice my skimming. solve the problem and cut them out of it.

I've thought the same, but come on, do you want bad knees AND bad wrists when you're older.

In general, spreads always have been and always will be a pain in the rear. To be honest, a lot of other trades are. Without trying to sound cocky, the sparks are the top of the tree brain-wise and I think a lot of other trades resent that. Just try and get on with who you can get on with.... some people won't ever change.

Yep plasterers hate us but then again al the building trades do due to the fact that we opted (35 years ago) fo a fixed hourly rate and overtime rates and they all stuck to the bonus system. As for jobs well if you dont put your cables inside the box they will kindly cut them for you and joiners well when you are pulling cables in dont they just love to bang their hammers and if you shout louder the bang louder and when your quite their quite and for some reason they actually think they know more about electrics than you.

Thank God I dont go near these jobs

still a few good old school spreaads about.
did a job last year and on return found every sunken box had been neatly trimmed of all excess plaster by the spreads labourer.
there again they were both about 60!!!!!

think best way to keep on right side of the spreads is to use the right depth of box so all yer first fix cables are tucked nicely inside and away from the dreaded trowel .
same with down lighters ,make a plan and cut holes after spreads have finished.
was talking to one the other day who had a job were some clown had pre-cut downlighters holes before plastering ,it really annoyed him off.
made the job twice as long and finish round each hole is always crap.
end of the day everyone just wants an easy life.

I understand that, but when I'm waiting around for a day....

2 days

3

4 days for the spread to turn up, I'll make all the holes I want.

When it comes down to it, you need one eye and one arm to become a plasterer. 'Oh, it's an art' they say. Balls. Try starting up as an electrician by 'making things nice and smooth' and see how far you get with your art.

I'm in a bad mood.

Instead of buying these guards, must be my age as the name escapes me now lol. I always stuffed newpaper into the box. Cut back your tails do a decent length, coil into the box and stuff my preference was Sun, always found one lieing about, and to be honest was the best use of it.
