Proving unit

My thinking is that the proving unit is the known supply and therefore should be used prior to any testing, I understand the veiw that how do you know the proving unit is ok, but you could go round and round this till the coos come home

Hi guys,met Dave this morning and sorted him with a proving unit,he,s a sound guy just a little bit uncertain on some things,we,he all been there so let's try and cut his him a bit of slack,after all we,be all been there haven,t we

I've found I've never needed to use a proving unit as either I can meter the incoming tails (as mentioned above) or just do a 250v IR test on my voltage detector, don't see why I should spend £60+ when I don't need to...

Hi,

Just to give my input, I wouldn't perform a safe isolation without my proving unit;I always use one.

you guys know my time is done on the tools now,but I remember how hard it was when I started,just glad I was able to help out a fellow sparky by letting him have a proving unit and lamp that I didn't need,at a fair price.It,s hard enough these days trying to find work these days and the cost of kit is ridiculous at times.

When I was an apprentice it was either a neon screwdriver or a lamp with two bits of wire,but mostly proved to be dead if the fuse was out,switched off or the lights went out.

If I dont have a tester on me and they tell me to just do it, the earth falls out and lands on the line only on domestic ofcourse

...and just for devilment,a proving unit provides a known,reliable voltage source....just like the DNO does....although,THEY can go faulty....just like a faulty proving unit...the circle of conflict...
