UK PSU Specifications

Hi all,

I need a Power Supply to run a couple of security cameras. They each came with one with these specs:

SWITCHING POWER ADAPTER​

MODEL: DSA-15P-12 UK 120120​

INPUT: 100-240V ~ 50/60Hz 0.5A​

OUTPUT: 12V ----- 1A​

My question is, if I want to purchase a new transformer or PSU to run BOTH cameras at the same time, is it sufficient just to get one at 12v 2A DC, or do I have to match the 0.5A input current, or does it have to change? Can anyone recommend a high quality one that will not pack up or run hot etc?

Thanks for the reply, that's very helpful.

When I went on eBay to look for this adapter I found tons of other DVE Switching Adapters, all with similar specs (12v 1A) but with numerous different model numbers and different input currents, like 0.3A, or the same 0.5A. It's begged the question why they make so many different ones if they just need one for each voltage and output current.

The input current isn't an important parameter under normal conditions and the actual current will bear little resemblance to the number given. It's simply a maximum that the manufacturers can be sure it won't exceed and might differ slightly from version to version, although the actual current taken by each supply under the same operating conditions will be almost identical.

There are indeed lots of different kinds of 12V 1A power supply, hence different model numbers. Apart from different connectors on the AC power input and 12V output, there may be versions with different national safety certifications, different earth leakage values, different output grounding configurations, different levels of RF interference suppression, different hold-up times, ambient temperature ratings, MTBF (expected lifespan) etc etc.

Again, for many purposes these can be ignored, but for critical and specialised usage they might be important, e.g. medical applications demand low leakage.

What's a good source for a 12v DC 2A adapter or transformer, just so that I don't end up with a horrible unreliable one?

I've used AC Adaptors R Us and found them very good with fast delivery and they are UK based.
