Hi
Need some help with a tech question
How do i know the size of a rope to employ when pulling cable?

Is there a calc for this
The factors to be considered I'm guessing
lenght of pull
Number of men and there pull force
Dead Load
Live Load
Rope in Compression
Tension in rope
Bending forces on rope
Deflection????

any one?

Thank you for the comment. again good advice for consideration. At what size length should i be employing rollers
i know its dependant on a number of factors. but is a UTS strenght for cable which would high light this is is it just to go back to the Maker?

How long is a piece of string?? How can anyone tell you that, without knowing what and where you intend pulling these cables. Cable manufacturers will Always tell /advise you to use cable rollers, there not going to advise you to drag cables along the floor or ground are they!! lol!!

Remember dragging cables in, for direct burial in a trench will 9 times out of 10, always damage the outer sheath of the cable. Always use cable rollers in this situation, ...the longer the pull the greater the need for rollers....

It was not the answer i was looking for or expecting
Its a lift and pull opperation and not over huge distances
15 meter vertical(cable will not be in ducting)
The point of this for me is there is engineered thoery behind all our work
If i pull a dead weight of X at what point will the stress of the now live load effect the conductors
Copper being a soft metal at what weight will the tension cause the reduction in csa.
Does the Steal wire take this strain?(talking to the maker)
would it be relevtive to conductor size and the size of the single stains making up the overall CSA
I.E. if you pull 500m of 4x1.5 200m vertically would the cable snap having pulled only 150m off the required 200m the drum with the weight of the live load now creating tenision on the cable forcing the fatuige.....?????

Re: Pulling SWA cables is the rope strong enough...How much can a man pull "Calc's RA

Why would you pull cable UP 15 or so metres vertically, if you can drop the cable in?? There are all sorts of supports for vertical run cables, even free hanging cables. Can't think of any vertical run cable that would come close to 200 metres, let alone 5OO metres. The highest structure i know of, is around 170 metres!! lol!!

tensile strength of copper you need to find out... done this years ago when done btec in construction.. interesting if i could remember half of it with electrical wiping it all out..

Hate to think of the volt drop on that.lol!!

But this entire thread is pie in the sky to our OP.

The average pulling power of the average human male = Geoff Cappes / Mr Bean.

I wouldn't dare take the pee out of Geoff Capes. But you should Tony.lol!

It’s Mr. Bean I’d be worried about ! ! ! !

OK I spelt Geoff Capes wrong
