How many times have we seen this one.

The cable is supported by a cat wire, and cable tied with drip loops.
Height is around 4 metres above the garden.
PVC shows no signs of UV or mechanical damage.
Run is around 6 - 8 metres.
RCD protection afforded.

Ok so its supported, High enough to be protected from damage. And to be fair runs in a shaded area.

I have spoken in the past with NIC EIC tech about this and they say its acceptable provided UV issues are taken into acount over the years.

Is it a perfect solution NO. It it dangerous, again I would say NO. Should you shout and rave MY god your all going to die !!!
I don't think so.

But someone has gone and scared an old lady half to death 6 weeks after her husband passed away.
They had been married 62 years.
She's been quoted two and a half grand to change to swa.

When people hide behind a regs book and pull this kind of stuff it makes me mad.
Whats your opinions lads would really like to know.

Sorry just letting off some steam, always gets my back up this kind of stuff.
I know works thin on the ground but fairs fair.

Give her a break

I'm struggling to comprehend how it comes to anywhere near ÂŁ2500 to install 6 to 8 metres of SWA, unless perhaps it comes with a new drive.

I would leave it as it is. Been there years, no doubt installed to correct regs at the time. If bare metal cat wire I would check if earthed ( some may say it doesn't matter). I think if done by todays standards 6m is the min height. Leave as it is, reassure the Lady, tell her to keep her hard earnt cash!

I wouldn't install it like that but now it's there I'd just mutter to myself and then ignore it.

Theres always someone who will try to take advantage.

ÂŁ2.5k? Crikey I've done rewires cheaper than that. Not many admittedly but you get the point.
Do what my learned friend Murdoch suggests.

Funny we were talking about this subject at work the other day.
Not the way I would do it personally but each to their own, Not sure about 17th ed but I remember that this method was fine according to 16th ed as long as it was above a certain height which Ime sure was less then 4m!

As for 2.5K what Is he using GWA instead of SWA!?? (G for gold....)

Sounds like some scum bag trying to take advantage of a old lady to me which really makes me mad!!

A bit of a damp squib here. If it is changed then installer is responsible and it won't comply with todays regs because of height. I personally wouldn't have a problem, but some might

4 metres above a garden is more than compliant.
In fact, the height rule is another of those quite open to common sense, just so long as vehicular traffic can't pass under it.

Really??? lol

Had this discussion with Elecsa some time ago regarding the 3.5m rule for inaccessible heights and 5.8m rule for areas accessible to vehicular traffic, and the conclusion was to use common sense where the cable is inaccessible.
Anyway, 4m is fine and compliant over a garden :)

But the way your post is written, suggests you want to make the cable low to ensure cars can't pass under it!
