Iv just seen a whole flat rewired with surface mounted pvc trunking at coveing and skirting height. they have used no elbow or t joints, no small-to-large connecting pieces, no collars at surface boxes, and no end caps. all joints have been smeared with standard decorators caulk. the end holes, mainly 16x40 trunking, have simply been stuffed with caulk. big gaps everywhere, up to 6mm at some connections. IS THIS IN COMPLIANCE WITH IEE? the wiring itself seems fine.

I am a joiner to trade but work closely with excellent electricians all the time, in commercial and residential properties, and i am sure they would never leave a finish of that kind. I can get 2 fingers inside the trunking at some points, without trying to force them. IS THIS RIGHT?

cheers Gents.

Did anybody else look at the Stelmax 1961 sealant data sheet, you would be advised to do so before ordering or using this stuff. Interesting reading, the product contains up to 10% Tolulene and 45% Methyl Ethyl Ketone, consentrations of the substances not to be taken lightly. HSE risk assessment required...area must be well ventilated or full face respirator (NPF20 filter) worn...neoprene or nitrile rubber gloves must be worn. Definitely not nice stuff.

It's pathetic this sort of installation. when people see that finish and comment about it and say that that is an electrical installation done by electricians. It makes me want to get out of the industry.
In fact, I have not worked for over 2 yrs I started saving 4/5 yrs ago to tied me over for a down turn in the economy. I was earning ÂŁ15 an hour with the agencies, now they want to pay you improvers rate.
Well they can go n ****e! I have got the 236, 2391 back in jan 1998,recently the 2382,and fully skilled with 30 yrs experience.
This country has gone to the dogs, and until there is some sort of proper representation and strong leadership i.e. (a proper union)
I am going to with-hold my labour and become a parasite to society.

They don't go out checking works in progress these day's?? If that's the case, they should cut the salaries of these so-called Clark of Works, cause that is a part of what a standard Clark of Works was all about, .....ongoing checking and verification of the standard of work being provided, according to the contract specifications...lol!!!!

Clark of works ....................relate that to a kid just out of uni with a degree in some sort of building services, that is loathe to leave his nice office where he gets tea in a clean cup and would not know the difference between a good job and one thrown in while driving past the site.

Clark of works .........................had one that made me take off all the trunking lid once, to make sure we had used black japan roundhead screws as per the spec, and this was high level stuff so up the wooden ladder he went ..................and he also walked around with a spirit level .............. and you called him Mr ...................... no first names for contractors.

My Brother-in-law is an electrical Clark of Works. He started life as a telephone technician with Reliance, then later on, shifted over to the electrical side of things, getting his start from his younger brother, who was quite well up with one of the big national electrical contractors at that time. Doesn't have any high qualifications but good solid experience. Later on while i was working in HK, i got him a start as a electrical works Inspector.
It was there through a friend he made, applied to the association of ''Clark of Works'' into which he was accepted, and has been working as such ever since in the UK...

Don't know what he's like on the job, but i think he could well be very similar to the guy you came accross, he does seem to be the type that likes dotting all the I's and crossing all those T's...lol!!!

Funny enough this guy was ex GPO as well ........................what was good about him was that he made decesions, sometimes ones you didn't like, but he made them and we got on with it, and often as not once he trusted you he could get you out of a few messy situations, to me what a Clark of Works should be.

He always had the attitude that as a contractor you were always trying to get one over him, and before he knew you that was how you were dealt with, but again so was everyone.

Out of work he was a lovely lad, remember one Christmas we finished lunch time and so off to the local for a wet, he made a point of coming in and there must have been 20-25, all trades in there, and put money over the bar for a drink as the job went well and hardly any snags, but it was still thank you Mr ........................ Lol the status quo had to be maintaned.

I once had some jumped up person like that above me. he called me by my first name and when i called to him by his first name he tried to blast me for it. "it`s Mr Hume to you" to which I told him he would be addressing me by my surname also as we were being formal. he tried shouting Phil later on and I just blanked him. when he came over and asked why I didn`t answer him I told him it was "Mr" to him. what a toilet the guy was. but it made him look a complete one in front of the guys as they all told him they wanted to be called MR from then on :D:D jumped up little no one.
