Hi Guys.
Doing a CU change.
Found a supply to the swimming pool pump shed done in orange Pyro. The cable is clipped along the outside of the house and then disappears underground reappearing in the shed.

I know nothing about Pyro.

1. Is it allowable to use it this way (instead of armoured)? If not, should I condemn it? Insulation between cores is good > 500Meg.

2. How can I work out the current rating? The end is potted and has tails printed 1.0/1.5 sqmm. Can I tell from the diameter?

Cheers
Pete

MICC is best ducted when being taken underground, be it sheathed or unsheathed. But apart from that, probably the best all round cable ever invented!! When installed correctly, will always out live the installer and by many decades too ...lol!!

Not just fire alarms Pete.

Back in the day whole factories and foundries were wired with it and when it's done right it looks very impressive and is virtually indestructible.

Thanks for the compliment Geordie,I do try to please

Did you work with that Des??

Yes,me and my old friend Pyro we were good friends

Making the ends off always gets the attention.but once you had the knack, it became very routine

Now dressing Pyro, that was another ball game, some could terminate the ends but would be useless at dressing the cables, the waves could be a compliment to the Atlantic ocean

As for the sheep.my Mrs must be turning me into a cannibal, mint sauce has been on the menu

Great mates with the stuff. The only real problem I had was in an industrial boiler house in the 70's. Wiring to some pumps, I think, but can't really remember. We had to fit protective capacitors and the wrong ones were provided (or faulty maybe). Some of them blew apart and the cables were quite badly damaged and had to be replaced. The memory is letting me down on this one but I think it was an inductive reactance matter. If anyone has any info to bring back the memories it may be interesting.

Served my time working with MICC. Schools mostly but did a hotel in St Andrews where all the lighting (?) was wired in it. Great stuff to work with. Wired the outside lights at home using it. Seen it regularly on spec - bare copper version - in listed buildings as it ages and gains a patina easily. It is fireproof but did any of you who went to college ever do the "tie a knot in it and hammer it flat with a mallet" test? IR test reading never altered. It's expensive to buy and install but if your looking for a fail safe install it's the berries. Off to look out my stripper and pot wrench to make an end off for old times sake....lol

Exactly what has happened to these !!

Looks bloody awful.

There used to be a ship breakers yard not far from here and as a kid it he 50's they were breaking warships that were surplus to requirements after the war. Dad knew the watchman and we used to get onto these ships and have a look around. The engine and boiler rooms were a cornucopia of polished metalwork of all types. Absolutely beautiful they were.

Life was much more interesting and fun in the days before the Heath and Safety Jobsworths came into being.

That was the time I decided that when "I got big" I would be a Royal Navy Engineer. I never did though. Ah well, C'est la vie.
