Discuss qualications??????????? in the Electrician Courses : Electrical Quals area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi can anyone help, I have NVQ level 3 in electrical and mechanical maintenance. Also I have 16th edition.I now want to go self employed as a private electrician. Since my apprenticeship in 1992 until now I have worked on 12vdc,24vdc,110vac,240vac and 315vac systems. This encompasses all aspects of installation and test within domestic and industrial enviroments.
would I be correct in assuming that I need to get 17th and at least part p to be able to install in domestic premises and the test and inspection city and guilds qualification to be able to sign off my work and the work of other people I know???

many thanks

identi ( v. confused...)

Get your AM2 & 17th, this will get you a JIB gold card.

To do electric in domestic you will have to join a part p scheme, these are ****e things that take your money for no point.

I believe that for Part P, you will require the 17th, although NAPIT will allow you 12 months in which to obtain it. Most likely the other schemes will as well.
If you do apply for a JIB/ECS card, you will be graded as a maintenance electrician, unless you obtain an NVQ3 in electrical installation.
The JIB/ECS card is only of any real use if you intend working on large building sites.
It doesn't matter what Qualifications you have, you are not under Part P allowed to sign off other people's work.

In think (I may be wrong) that everybody who works in domestic houses needs C&G2382, wiring regs (7671 2011).
I think (I may also be wrong) that everybody who works for themselves in domestic houses needs to be able to inspect, test and certify their work. Whether you submit the cert to the building control office or whether you submit it to Nickit, Napit and run is not the issue. The issue is can you write the cert and sign off the work. As far as I know this requires at least C&G2392.

That's my understanding of the situation.

2392 or 2391 is a recognised qualification, but you don't neeed it for test/inspection/certifying, you need to be competent. the qual. is just a paper to say you are.

I agree with Spinlondon that we are always taught that we can't test someone else's work - which makes the proposed changes to Part P all the more strange. They are suggesting that DIYers should be allowed to do the work so long as they have it tested and certified by an electrician.
Weird.
