Hello guys, i've recently got into the Royal Engineers as an Electrician, I know that you do not gain all of the qualifications an Electrician needs to work in the civilian sector during the training courses, I was hoping somebody here knew how the system works in relation to getting time off to add qualifications during active service? Am I allowed X amount of time per year to do courses at colleges or do I apply for time off to gain the qualifications? I read that able skills offer weekend only courses (on a 2 on, 2 off basis), would this be the only way to do it? Thanks for any replies

Hi,

Can you clarify a few things first,

1. Are you already an Electrician joining the Forces?
2. Are you joining to be trained as an Electrician?
3. If you are joining to be an Electrician, is that as an apprentice or Adult trainee?

I only ask as I was an Electrician in the Engineers, but that was a long time ago!

Hello, I'm 22 years old and unqualified, my older brother is a sparky and I've always regretted not training as one but I've always wanted to join the forces so seemed the best way to link them together.

I was more worried about how getting time off in the forces works when it comes to quals, if I can foot the bill for a 3 week course, would they allow me the time off to go and gain it?

Hi,

Time off, I don't think so. We are talking about the forces here, you don't get time off.If you are based somewhere in the UK ( unlikely ) then you can use your evenings as you wish.

When I did my qualifications we did City and Guilds in the evenings, totally separate to our military instruction ; but as I said previously that was sometime ago.

I will say though the courses were excellent.

Remember though, first and foremost you will be a Combat Engineer.
