Background: I have a degree in Construction And Quantity Surveying and am currently working towards a RICS accreditation. Electrics is something that has always interested me and I have done more than a fair share of DIY for myself and friends.

Requirements: I would like to gain further knowledge in this field to wire up my own houses and carry out work for family/friends legally (and safely). Thus, I don't want to be paying someone to inspect my work.

Question: I've done a bit of research to date (this forum folder being a goldmine for it) and know the options for training to become employed. However, what are the options for my requirements above (i.e. not requiring employment)?

You will have to pay the LABC when you notify them that you have done work and as you are not an electrician they may charge you for testing to ensure that the installation is ok.

Hence, this is what I want to avoid by achieving the appropriate 'license' to inspect my own work myself. This will not only make me safer but will also save a lot of time and money.

Just reading the Thread title finished me off, however to answer your question, to be able to carry out electrical installation work correctly and to the Minimum standards as itemised in BS7671 you will need to study at college "and" gain experience via an experienced mentor on site for a decent period of time.
