Saw this last week on a new build that is approx 18 months old. I suppose it doesn't matter that it's a new build as could happen anywhere at any time. But it did make me think is every single house on the estate with a garage supply done in the same way....bodgey bodge and the bodge-sters!

The other end of the SWA in the garage is equally as rough. And it's plain to see that it is incorrect at that end which should have been picked up on in my view.

Not spoke to the owner yet as they have been away on holiday.

all went wrong with the invention/introduction of dot & dab and roof trusses. whoever heard of a roof with a hernia?
And of course people without any trade thinking they can do anything, some site I worked on way back had 1 electrician and most of the mundane work being done by unskilled labour after a few months of house bashing they became Electricians.

I take it the sheath at the other end hasn't been terminated correctly?
The other end is just as rough, but is obviously so as the armour doesn't even enter the sub board. The armour and outer sheath are cut short about two inches above the board.

See Pete even back then you had Electrical Trainee.
No Mate they weren't 3 ww, never completed any training, might have been classed as Apprentices, but n fact all they were used for was an extra hand on large jobs, sad really as some of them were nice Lads from nice families.

Im sad to say in the last few years people have no pride in the work they produce, some it might come down to the kids who work on site as they train new apprentices, the kids don't know any better so it rubs of on to the apprentices.

When I was a apprentice, (late 1990s )I worked with a 50 year old sparky who took pride in his work and my work had to be spot on if it was wrong, not straight etc , it would have to come out .

I know what you mean Jay, the problem with most work these days, not just electrical, is bash it in, collect your pay and move on, sadly the way of most things today, of course there are the exceptions, as in every thing.

I could accept the terminal block so long as it is rated for the load but the SWA just makes me annoyed, if you are not going to use the armour why use an armoured cable? If you need to use armoured cable then earth the armour!
Is that exposed copper on the (apparently unsleeved) black core 20mm from the terminal block. Where does the earth go?
Probably because the 3mm earth sleeve wouldn't over the insulation!

The t&e at the top has a grommet and is terminated well. Are you sure this wasn't installed by a DIY'er who heard he needed SWA?

Absolutely positive mate. Owner has been in around 18months since it was first built. There is a labelled garage cct on a 16A breaker. The owner is a male nurse and between him and his fella they know as much about electrics as I know about nursing!!

But agreed, I have seen plenty of DIY attempts such as this.
