Burnt Fingers

Been PT testing last week (yawn) and have a odd one:

13A Double Socket with a 2.5mm running 10" toa 16A Comando Socket, which feeds a circuar saw. It needs to on a 16A socket or in winter, the inrush pops a 13A cartridge use. Its a ring main to the socket, protected by 20A Type B Mcb.

16A Socket is cracked so I want to replace it

I cannot find anythng in the regs but it feels wrong. Anyone wlling to give a helpful answer?

OP says its been converted from 3ph to single phase - does he mean a new motor or a VSD has been fitted.. either way a 2.2KW motor single phase DOL would require a 40amp (B,C) or 25amp (D). A 3phase motor through a 1ph - 3ph VSD vary across the brands so look at the manufactures instructions but going with the grain here, I doubt its suitable for plug top use as it keeps popping the 13amp fuse 'assuming their is nothing wrong with the saw'

I know all of the above posts are correct and you guys are trying to impart wisdome ect but the answer to the op's question is.......
621.2 Confirmation that the installation is not damaged or deteriorated so as to impair safety.
621.3 Damage/Deterioration
416.2 Basic protection
There are some that could allow you to change the accessory. But the points the others have raised are valid and may even supersede the need for a new plug/socket.

Thank you Diddy: I in fact confimed that circuit was ok, ring, loop 0.38 ohms and i replaced the original accessory with a 16A RCD protected Socket with a 16A D Type breaker fitted. Its wired ino the ring

Minor Works Completed, nothing trips in use. And the man that has never seen 4mm flex in a 13A plugtop IMO has not done enough PAT Testing.

But I have learned frm Diddy to look harder and with wide eyes at the regs, thanks again..

Ring loop? is that the ZS or the resistance of the RFC conductors, if so which one L,N or CPC have you carried out an R1+R2 test? all relevant information as you are saying it is a ring

I know enough to know, that the BS 13A plug top was never designed to take 4mm cords/flexes and there is physically not enough room in them or the cord grip for that matter, to be able to adequately accommodate a 4mm cord or flex.... And i don't need any buckshee PAT testing course to tell me that either!!

So i take it those instances where you did come across 4mm cords into a 13A plug top got a ''PASS'' sticker from you did they?? Par for the course as they say!!

Childish Engineer. You are insulting and do not deserve a response. You are one of he reasons I do not bother with the forum.

You just have to ignore people like him brother. Don't stop interacting with the rest of us because of people like engineer. Bringing up topics like you did makes people like me learn new things. I'm presently studying for my residential exam, and I'm trying to soak in as much knowledge as I can. So God speed and ignore the devil when he finds someone ignorant enough of goodness to use to persecute others. Hope to hear more issues from you in the future. Have a great night.
