Discuss Question re Neon Testers in the Electrical Tools and Products area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi, I don't want to sound dumb but I'm new to all this and just want to know HOW and WHEN people typically use the voltage tester screwdrivers? Can you actually place them directly onto live conductors in a spur, for example?

the neon driver works by passing a small current through a resistor and a neon and then your body to earth. that is why 99% of us will not use them. theoretically, they are safe but if faulty could give you a right belt. theoretically the Titanic was safe but i'm glad i didn't buy a ticket. apaert from which, in decent light you wouldn't see the neon lit so might assume the terminal was dead when it ain't. use a non contact volt stick ( rough idea) and an approved voltage tester such as made by fluke.

Thanks but that doesn't answer the first part of my question, if you could enlighten me I'd be very grateful. Cheers.

If you read the post, you'll find that there are numerous occasions of the voltage tester screwdrivers "Failing" ie: you'll get a shock. You CAN use the neon screwdriver for testing a live spur if you choose to but it's NOT recommended.

can you sell me a neon driver , with a MFT thrown in for free

Thanks guys thats cleared things up. It just surprises me that they still include them in all the VDE driver sets, even in the more reputable stores! Thanks again.

I don't like all this criticism of neon drivers, they do have some good points ........
Some of them come with clips on so you can stick them in your shirt pocket next to your pen, then everybody thinks you know what you're doing!
Also, you've always got something to stir your tea up with.
