I have a carbon copy book in the van that I use for small "quotes" that I can write out and give to the customer while on site if it is relatively simple eg adding a socket or standard CU change. MOre complex or larger jobs are done at home and come with a detailed scope sheet etc.
In all cases they get a copy of the T&C's. carbon copy is not as neat as typed but is quicker and works for small jobs. Also always do estimates and not quotes due to the possibility of unforseen things.

Ahhh Ande!
How are you getting on with your spreadsheet? Have you made more improvements? or are you still using the heavily modified version of mine?
You know what guys, it would be good if we could have a place where we could share these things. I have a few good business tools and I'm working on two more at present. It's nice to incorporate other peoples ideas into your own work.

I'd agree with that.

I'm also working on a blog I own - which I'd like to get revitalised over the holiday - the idea for it was always to have an emphasis on small business.

I'd like to run some articles, how-tos, and so forth -

So if anyone has ideas they'd like to see explored, business related, I'm happy to spend some time writing the articles.

There will be an emphasis too on trade related business - too many "business" sites out there are either American, or assume you're simply selling products - I want this to be real life, real issues, and based on things tradesfolk face every day.

Let me know.

Hmmm sounds interesting, I'll have a think and let you know if I have any ideas. I did post a thread on how to calculate your hourly rate, just a guide for those starting up. There is a landscape gardening website and the owner has a blog. He puts together some really good articles on running a small business. Of course they're aimed at gardeners etc, but they're useful to anyone who's self employed.

I'll look out for it - not one I've come across.

Agreed, the "item" the business is focused on is less important than the business acumen - but that said, there is some fundamental differences between product based businesses and service ones - trades in particular.

A lot of it will be based on my own experiences, and education - and more specifically where the education fails to meet the reality! I've yet to meet the business degree that tells you what to do when it all turns to tur...key.

Thanks for the pointer though, and a very happy Christmas.

I did see a thread giving a guide to how many hours etc it takes to install different types of circuits etc, Voltimax not sure if it was one of yours? Does anyone have a link to it??

drop me a pm with your email address again and I will send you the latest version of the sheet.

I could upload into the sparky pub if you like. perhaps the mods can put a sticky in the pub for useful forms/ templates (probably already there and I am just not looking).

For most jobs I tend to nip round with my trusty notepad then send a detailed estimate / quote in the post. For small jobs / call out I have a sheet which I record the work required and cost etc, then get the customer to sign it before I start the work.

if you go onto google there are a few web sites you can use to download quoting software and most give a free triel not sure if anyone has had any luck with them?
