Random wire in my bathroom...

The person who owned my flat before me installed spotlights in all of the ceilings. There is a wire coming through my bathroom ceiling near the mirror which i think is connected to this circuit. It only has a red and black wire. No earth. Can i use this cable to fit a chrome light above my mirror?

No,not a metal fitting,if in any doubt call a qualified electrician.

This is clearly a situation where you have the circuit in question (whole or partially) without earthing and it means that you should only use double insulated class II equipment on such circuits. If in doubt seek help from an electrician.

I agree with all the responses above you cannot have unearthed metal fittings.
You should also consider that the light you fit should be suitable for use in the bathroom.

If the person before you installed spots everywhere I would first get them all inspected and tested 'if' there is no certificate for them.

They may not have needed certification, and they may have been installed way before Part P was even thought of.

I agree that if there as never been any kind of inspection on the installation, and it is old, you could possible advocate an EICR, but in all honesty I'm still of the old school, if it's working leave well alone.

Saying that all the advice given is good and should be followed, perhaps if the OP did get a sparks in, the sparks could easily wire a new cable in then any suitable fitting could be used

Yes you Can!! There are plenty of chrome metal class11 fittings out there, and suitable for bathroom locations too. I agree that the OP needs to contact a Qualified electrician, if only to get his installation checked out to give him peace of mind. He could also ascertain that the light fitting in question, is a Class1 or Class11 fitting....

If it's a red and black wire with no earth it may well be a 12v output from a transformer for a downlighter.....but echoing the advise above,get it properly checked by an electrician before proceeding.
