I quoted (without seeing) estimate £100 + materials to fit 2 external lights (customer supplied), cable into house and into void above dropped ceiling, connecting into lighting circuit, supply internal switch and all cable ( about 5m 1.0mm ) complete MWC. called it half a day. just had message saying they've got a local sparks quoted £40 all in. bottom feeder or what?

No MWC, no testing, no insurance, no liabilities insurance, no after sales support, no tax, no VAT, etc, etc. The same story across the industry, there's no point in comparing prices unless you're comparing prices for a comparable service ("comparing apples with apples", as the old saying goes. If someone says "I've got a cheaper quote", don't be afraid to tell suggest they keep shopping around as they'll get loads of cheaper quotes... and a few that may be more expensive. The customers you want to deal with will be the ones that see you at face value and come back to do business. Don't join the race to the bottom!

That customer is not worth your time. Some people are happy to have a DIY job done. My guess that would be a local handy man doing it.
“Well hey it’s only a couple of lights, how hard can it be”.
The race to the bottom once again.
The Installers working group I’m on reporting back to the Hackett enquiry is coming up with some minimum competency levels hopefully the Government we take them on. We can only hope.

Not even ‘no job to small’ handymen in my local area work for less than £15p/h

My fence blow down and I got a local handyman to fetch and replace a post and panel , he charged me £20p/h.
He did a good job and took all the rubbish away.

I must admit years ago I would get people ring me and say ‘how much to put up a light’

My default ‘over the phone’ price was £40 , as I just assume it’s a straight swap of a light and would roughly take me half hour.

Had my fingers badly burned once when I was fresh faced to the trade and I had to move a light over about 6-8 inches , extend cables in loft (whichbwas full of carp and fully boarded) and then put up new fitting. Took me about 2.5 hours...

As I had told the customer the fee of £40 , that’s what I charged.

We all live and learn ....

I rarely quote without seeing first, I will say if it is like for like as stated & tests ok, then it is likely to be X hours or £Y but if more is involved it will be more.

If I get a quoted job & it takes me less time, I will charge less & the customer is over the moon.
as long as you don't get pain in lunar roubles.

Did you explain you need to quote an extra hour for un loading and then re loading your wheel chair ?
