Ratchet crimper

Hi,

I have just managed to loose my ratchet crimper set, I am sure I left them at a customers house but they deny seeing them.

I had the draper expert set in a case with ratchet crimper and lots of different crimps.

I need to replace it, but was wondering if I should get one of the crimpers with interchangeable crimp jaws or just go for the standard crimper which only does insulated crimps.

Would be useful to get any suggestions on a recommended brand as well.

I've not used the interchangeable crimper but they look smart.

When you buy a pair have a look at the jaws. Some only crimp on half the jaw, which means you have to crimp twice.

Some of the ratchet crimpers for insulated crimps have jaws that are only designed to be used in one direction, the die only crimps the connection to the conductor not the insulation they don't need to be crimped twice and produce a better crimp as you are not damaging the insulation of the crimp by compressing it to the same depth as the conductor.

Anything multifuction is always bulkier /heavier.
If you use insulated most of the time, just replace what you had.

I have A pair of Cembre crimpstars for the red yellow and blue crimps. They seem like decent quality. They make others as well for bigger/uninsulated crimps.

Just replaced mine with some Facom crimpers, nice bit of kit and will crimp from both sides.

thats what i like about my cheap silverline ones.

it makes it easier if you can crimp from either side

I need crimpers for insulated crimps, butt crimps up to 16mm and ferruuls. Is there an all in one or is it separates? Any suggestions? I like the look of the knipex ones.

I've got several pairs of Knipex crimpers, or ratchet crumpets as I have called them before, they are very good.

Seriously though you really need the proper crimpers for each type of crimp, although IMO the 'pliers' type crimpers are OK for ferrules because the terminal screw will be screwing onto the crimp - you're not expecting it to be holding two cables together under tension.

my lasy ck set only went upto 2.5 but the knipex go lower lol

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies, I seem to be drawing the conclusion that very few sparks use the crimpers with the interchangeable jaws. The Only reason I was looking at them is the convenience of having everything in one pouch.

I only use the crimpers for eyelets and butt connectors so maybe I should just be looking at stand alone tools of a better quality and maybe a pair of ferrule crimpers as well.

Why get the VDE ones? I don't think crimping live cables is really a good idea.

Yeah I know, and I don't crimp or touch anything live.

you could use that argument for why do I have everything else as VDE? I like the handles. Cutters, pliers etc, everything is VDE

thats the code for them, they are now £26 on amazon but worth it.

there very good and i find them easier than rachets.

a good tip with knipex is always look at the code on the handle, it makes comparing prices a lot easier

(i cant find them for under £26 now but i know i paid less)

there worth a lot more imho though

It looks like they have changed the design, the only ones I can find now only crimp 1 - 16mm not .25 - 16mm.

use the part number only in seach or knipex then part number

your looking at a different model, knipex makes different versions of the same tools that look very similar to each other

I was looking at the picture of the tool (same as above) and it only covers from 1 - 16mm, I guess the pictures is wrong.

They do the job for £12.95. I bought them because I was crimping a lot of ferrules at the time and fancied an upgrade from using pliers.
