rcbo or mcb

I have been asked to put in a new circuit in a kitchen but there is only an old 4 way with 3036 fuses. I was thinking of upgrading the cu but cannot fit in a 17 th split load unit so was going to fit a small 5 way (ther are currently only 3 circuits) and put my new circuit on a rcbo and the existing on mcb,s(due to cost ) as I would not be making them less safe or would I be obliged to rcd everything. If so could I fit a front end rcd or would thios then not satisfy discrimination? any opinions?

Yes I have recommended this myself but the extra £110 is putting the customer off and they will probably go elsewhere and I could do with the work

I was justlooking for opinions on if I change the protective devices I am then obliged to make certain that these circuits comply with the current regs or just to test them and establish that they are safe . after all I could hardly be expected to change the cable colours or move them if they were not in the zones. so why should I be obliged to rcd them .

Fit a garage type CU these have a RCD main switch, and room for a couple of MCB's, put your new circuit into this, and leave the rest alone. They only cost about 30 quid, but you will need a henley and some suitable sized tails and a bit of 16mm earth cable.

Cheers..........Howard

Ive got a Pro elec consumer unit and some RCBO's , if im alowed to say on here you can have this and 4 RCBO,s for £40.00 ,(let me know what you need (thats if im allowed to offer these like i have on here ) its a 6 way CDU , and its a budget board not the world greatest but ive never had any problems with them use them in rented houses

If I understand the regs correctly it says that any additions or alterations should not be detrimental to the safety of the installation.which a newer cu wouldn,t be and all my new work would comply with current regs

Its the size of the board thats important it needs to be less than 230mm wide let me know and where you are

I'd rather see a 'front end' RCD than no RCD protection at all to the existing circuits!

If you're changing the board then you have to incorporate RCD protection to those circuits that require it and that is normally all in a domestic environment, do it properly or walk away.
