Just been looking at the new regs book cant find any change for the need for rcd protection on minor works i.e extra socket to existing circuit
Was this recommendation dropped

I think the customer would be look at the cost of adding a socket more.
Dont get me wrong i am all for rcd protection but having to fit a rcd at the fuse board just to add a socket next to a existing one is over the top.

I think the idea was ...if the install (as far as the electrician/competent person was concerned) was deemed safe to add on to without RCD protection then it was at the discretion of said electrician/competent person...but i could see the confusion ....

Makes you wonder how we all survived certain death before RCD devices!! In many cases there stipulated use is going way over the top! The next thing to the RCD is this new AFD. Where these units are supposed to be able to detect potential Arc's before they happen!!! (that i'd like to see proved to me)

Already in the States they are combining RCBOs with these so-called Arc detecting devices. And in New builds over there they are now being called for AFD protection as standard. There is a rather large body of prominent Engineers, that don't believe they work too well, if at all ...lol!!!

I wonder how long it's going to be before they bring these things to the UK in any numbers.?? ...And how long before they are as common as RCD devices and written into BS 7671 as yet another protection you have to apply to a final circuit....

I understand it that if you are changing the circuit (adding a point)the whole circuit not just the new point needs to have RCD protection to comply unless the cables are maniacally protected or buried deeper than 50mm

IMO, if the socket could be used for portable equipment out of doors and the new cable is surface mounted or deeper then 50mm then an rcd socket will do. if cable is buried in floor/wall at <50mm the the new cable will also need rcd protection.

What is the best way to provide RCD protection on a ring final circuit which you are modifying that is on a standard MCB but an old type board which no RCBO replacement exists? And customers does no want ugly RCD sockets?
Do you just add another RCD unit next to the board? or do you note on cert that circuit has no RCD protection?

Given the regs how could you justify not fitting one?
