got to do a inital inspection of a db in a new sub-station feeding just sockets lights heating ect it all installed in metal conduit and is spead over three rooms my question is do the sockets need to be rcd 30ma protected or can you get away with it as only competant person are only allowed to enter ? im thinking on the lines off extension leads being used outside

IMO, the only people entering the sub will be eople who are electrically knowledgeable, or will be accompanied by someone who is (SAP). So no RCD required. The last 11kv sub i worked in, the sockets were not protected by RCD

I agree with johnboy, but it seems this a grey area for us all. There should be a clear rule to follow.

Is it for a periodic, or addition? I am thinking that it wouldn't get unsatisfactory anyway.

as with all things, the "competent person" bit is as clear as mud.

we still install sockets with RCD protection in our substations, and test them on a 6month rotation too. Even though I am a "competent person" I still prefer to have sockets on an RCD, although I wouldn't mark an installation down because of it. As said, to enter the sub you are either going to have some kind of competence or qualification do so or be with someone that has, and this would (IMO) exempt the need for RCD's to be fitted on sockets.

As per above from Dave. Swap to a 63A outlet and problem goes away. What gets plugged into it is not part of an inspection.
