RCD protection

Hi, couple of quickies,

I have been asked to change some lights and fit some down lighters in a kitchen and also to change 2 outside walllights, are there any requirements for RCD protection for these?
Can outside sockets be taken as a spur from a ring (30mA rcd on ring) ?

Hmm tricky as downlights are notifiable especially in a kitchen.

Personally i would RCD protect them.

Yes you can spur for the outside socket.

Thanks for the reply Jason, I don't think I worded my Q very well, I have 2 existing lights in a kitchen to change and two existing outside lights also to change and to install some downlighters in the kitchen. Everything on this installation is 30mA protected except the lighting circuits which are on the main switch side of the split board about 18 years old. I though that kitchen lights and external lights should be RCD protected but on searching through 7671 and the building regs I cannot actually find it stating this. I don't want to go adding costs to a job that don't really need it particularly for this guy who is just giving me work as he know I am starting out on my own, however I want to make sure it is right. And it will be right mate.

As i said, recessed downlights need to be notified under Part P.

Replacing existing lights dont need to be 'P'd.

However, if possible swap out the MCB for the lights for an RCBO if they are available for the board. Its not required but i would if it was my job.

Perfectly understandable.

Trouble is, to make sure it is right you need to be clear...

As Jason stated, RCD`s not specifically required for lighting cct in kitchen. However, for your info RCD would be required for any cct with cables buried in walls @ <50mm

& more doom & gloom (assuming you`re not reg`with Part P scheme) outside sockets are also notifiable

Make of that what you will.
