Thank you again. The best part to all this that people like antimatter and others here on the forum enjoy passing on this experience.

I had guys like them to ask on site when I did my apprenticeship many moons ago. The Pee take was horrendous but they like antimatter wanted to help and enjoyed it. The tradegy to this is that my generation don't have the chance to pass on this to new comers apart from the forums. Apprenticeships are trying to make a comeback, but without an industry in the UK where do they serve them??

Long may this and other forums exist to pass on that experience and help guys who like you seem to want to learn and improve their knowledge, as long as you keep asking people on here will keep helping, after all your going to be us ole F..ts one day lol

How do you carry out live testing of a single phase rcd?

Connect your tester as follows,
earth lead to earth bar in CU
Live lead to live load side of RCD, Neutral lead to neutral load side of RCD, press the test button and await. 7 tests are required to live test RCD.

x 0.5 of rated trip current
x1
and x5, all at zero degrees, then repeat at 180 degrees, then test mechanical function of test button.

Job done.

If it is easier you could also test the RCd at a suitable socket using the plug in lead that comes with your test set, i prefer to test at source.

Cheers........Howard

Functional test ?;)

Are we going to also tell the lad about 100ma + rcd that only have the 1 and 5 times tests or about S type lol ............naw leave that for another day eh guys

We could go on forever, but i was just (like an earlier post) explaining the test procedure for the majority of RCD's found in 17th edition boards in domestic installs in the UK.

Cheers..........Howard

have to disagree with part of your answer, malcolmsandford. the rating in A e.g. 63A is the max.design load of the RCD, it's the MCB that is 6A or 10A. but your trip part of the answer was spot on

Yes if you were working on a split board Telectrix agree as you would have the mcb for overload protection and that 63amp RCD would be covering them.

I used the lighting example for a 6 or 10 amp RCD to be honest. I could have used something that took a 63amp supply. But off the top of my head could not think of anything domestically that would use that much lol. Could have gone into something commercial but then you might be pushed to find something single phase taking that much.

It was just to explain the use of the RCD, sorry for any confusion

Where abouts can I find a comprehesive list of all lables i.e danger ident and other notices according to the regs. Thanks guys

Well the onsite guide has a few pages and there is some stuff in bs7671 about where they go and why.I was after a kind of list of types a little less wordy,I mean its pretty obvious why we have them and where they need to go isn't it?
