My friends rcd is tripping on all the circuits it supplies. If has been working fine for years. I believe it supplies a number of different rings/radials.

i am currently away and cannot get there until Monday so I am unable to do any tests at the moment.

He has switched off all mcbs on the rcd side, rcd then can be switched on but as soon as ANY circuit on that side is switched on it trips either immediately or within 20 seconds.

Nothing worse than someone just posting to get an answer without thinking first but fault finding is a skill which I am embarrassed to say I am poor at.
However will give my thoughts..

Difficult to test rcd if it wont stay on to be tested but will see if I can do ramp Test.
Will also disconnect each circuit fully and try and narrow down.
Will Ir test each circuit.. but even if I find a culprit why are ALL circuits tripping it!
Unlikely to be a fault with RCD could try a new one if other options fail.

Am I missing anything obvious?
Sorry for the pidgin English but on a phone!

You should have 100 thanks now lol.

I think you're getting a bit mixed up Mick! You have 25 thanks received and you have given 5! You're more helpful than you thought :)

Faulty appliance?
No mention of things being unplugged.
RCD may just be doing what it was made for.

Fair point ! But having said that , once you have narrowed it down to which circuit the fault appears to be on , this would then naturally be the next thing to investigate .

Took out all all neutrals, found a fault with one of the rings which only fed 4 sockets. Found continuity between neutral and earth. Nothing was plugged in. The first socket I took off (which my friend said he had had some trouble with in the past) looked ok apart from the screw holding the neutrals in was sticking right out, not nicely hidden amongst the plastic in a recess so my guess is that it was somehow in contact with the back box (but how I don't know!) as everything started working fine and the continuity was gone! I now love fault finding!! :smiley2: (ps..enter key not working hence very long paragraph!)

a lot of faults turn out as simple things. it's just a logical approach required. narrow it down to the circuit, then tio half the circuit, then half again etc. till you find the cause. having said that, even a simple fault can take 30 mins. or 5 hours to locate. happy days.
