Another good reason for having (if at all possible) the freezer(s) on a non RCD protected circuit (as in protect the cabling one of the other ways!).

The few times it's been possible to surface run the circuit and then use a flex outlet (not socket) has made sense to me. My neighbour came home two weeks ago and her freezer had a ÂŁ100 quids worth of mush in it.

Was a rusty light fitting in garage (not touched for 20 years) just suddenly gone short circuit.

Would it be a Samsung freezer by any chance, been having a few problems recently with their kit. Found a fault on a fridge / freezer and rang Samsung to query what I found they came out and fixed it FOC due to a recall on some parts, original fault I found and queried is still not resolved

no, it's an AEG but it was initially over heating and then it was getting too cold. both problems fixed but since then the RCD is tripping.
