RCD tripping

Recently, whenever we plug in either our kettle (1850-2200 Watts) or our iron (2300-2750 Watts), it trips the RCD for that circuit. Nothing has been changed on the installation, and we've had both appliances for a few years and they never used to cause this problem. Up until recently, whenever the RCD did trip, I simply re-set it and then we were able to use whichever appliance it was. However, this morning there was a loud pop when the missus plugged in the kettle, and now the kettle won't work at all, despite me changing the fuse in the plug. Also, the socket which she plugged it into won't work either: the switch is stuck in the open position. Any ideas welcomed.

if your kettle is only a month old it will still be guaranteed so take it back to where you got it but how about the iron is it still making your RCD trip or was it just your socket ?
