Hi all.

Just starting out on my own and have a job to quote for. Would really help me if I could get a feel for how to go about working out a quote. So the job is fit 18 down lights, one set with loft access from above and one set with carpet and boards up from first floor to fit in ground floor ceiling. Also to replace socket fronts on about 10 sockets. Replace four existing outside lights, replace approx 6 light switches, fit a double socket in new location and move 1 double socket approx 6 inches. Currently customer is looking to supply materials. Would this job be better to quote as a day rate or per fitting changed/installed? What would be a reasonable day rate that isn't excessive in Hertfordshire or price per item? Really appreciate any help and advice. I'm hoping I will pick this all up as I go, including working out van costs, working costs and my time on top, plus PL insurance, elesca membership, crest issued and so on but I'm a bit lost for now as to where to start. Many many thanks in advance

Re: quoting

I normally go for a day rate, roughly a couple of hundred a day! Work out how long you feel it will take to do then maybe a day or half day on top!

Out of interest how did you pick up the work?

Re: quoting

Work out how much you want to earn in a day and then multiply it by the number of days you think it will take and add a bit for unforeseen problems.

I'd say at least £200 a day in Hertfordshire depending on travel etc.

Hum.... watch that one - especially with cheap crxp downlights. What happens if the client buys the wrong parts?

Regarding your business overheads, work on £500 per month and you won't be far out. You will probably think this is high BUT I can tell you this is about right (excluding buying a vehicle).

You need to list all your fixed overheads, and your variable overheads .........

Don't forget to save each month for tax and NI - I buy premium bonds as my way of saving AND keep ALL of your receipts.

Theres loads of threads in the Business section so go and peruse at your leisure

And then what do you do, just cash out your premium bonds when it's time to pay the tax man? Not a bad idea to be honest.

Yup. Exactly what I do, but I try and save more than my anticipated bill. Whe done on line, I can buy easily and cash in easily. A word of advice, each bond has to be held for 1 Callander month before going into the draw, so buy on the 28thand it's just over 1 month, buy on the 1st and it's 2 months. Yes I have had the odd £25 win

you have to save for your tax bill, buying premium bonds makes the cash just out of easy reach!

it makes sense. And like you say it keeps the money just out of reach. I've not won anything on my premium bonds since 2009 but I only have £400 invested. I'll definitely be considering your method, thanks!
