I am new to these forums and am looking for a little advice on what to do about my re-settlement qualifications upon leaving the royal navy. To cut a long story short I am being discharged on medical ground due to being diagnosed with type one diabetes whilst on deployment on a submarine. Prior to joining the navy I was qualified 16th edition and had two years experience under my belt on several different functions of the electrical intustry, i.e domestic, industrial and commercial.I understand that I am going to need to re-qualify as I have been out of the game for a good number of years. The courses the navy are offering me for free are these:-ECS Health & Safety – JIB

Durham Sparky is the man to talk to. He's ex U-boat. some say every ship he sailed on sank, so they put him in a submarine.

must just not be showing up properly on this browser then. Showing up with lots of text missing. Does it end with the word JIB like on mine? Because it's not meant to do that haha

Welcome to the forum, unfortunately being a Matelot is bad enough but one who purposely sinks a boat is even worse...

Are you eligible for ELC, these will lift a big financial burden. There are numerous courses available through the system to get you qualified, fortunately you have some previous experience which will help you massively. Listen to the advice from your CRO however take it with a pinch of salt as most of them have no real experience, yet another private company trying to keep their statistics up.

Where are you based?

I'm based in plymouth mate. I am going to be resettling back up north though on the wirral. I did mention using my ELC but the post I submitted has only half posted for some reason. I was thinking of using the ELC for night classes in other trades. I.E a basic plastering course or a painting and decorating course. The City and guilds quals I can get from the mob are contract funded so don't have to pay for them. You ex mob yourself mate?

Army, 23 years man and boy...

IIRC ELC won't fund your basic courses as they're not NVQ accredited, I used my pittance of resettlement grant to cover plastering, plumbing and brick laying and used ELC to fund my C&G stuff. My 5 week wonder (Electrical Trainee) course cost ÂŁ2565, it cost me ÂŁ36 with the funding. Although basic courses they have proven to be very handy in and out of work. My sister-in-laws boyfriend is a paint splasher and is racking the cash in at the minute.

Some fo the more experienced sparks on here will tell you what qualifications are the best and what they look for as employers. Not earning the ÂŁ50K a year they promised me...

So Strima...did you fall straight into self employment or working for someone else? Did the city and guilds courses give you enough to register with a governing body i.e NIC/EIC / Napit? I have subcontracting work lined up as soon as I get the qualifications under my belt. I think the route you went down seems like a very logical process. I get full ELC upon leaving the mob due to it being a medical discharge. I am not sure this will cover the costs of the courses though as if I do it through a training provider it is going to exceed the £2k allowance. I could do the basic courses at night school with no real issues I would have thought. The electrical stuff is the main route. To re-iterate on the quals they supply it is:- ECS Health & Safety – JIBCITB Electrical Installation Level A Full Scope17th Edition C&G 2382-12. (Optional)Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations. C&G 2394. (Optional.)Is this enough?
