I went to look at a house the other day that is in desperate need of a re-wire. For starters the board was old fuse wire! To cut a long story short the Customer had another electrician look at it. This so called electrician took one switch off in the whole house and declared it did not need a re-wire because there was an earth in the cable! He didn't even look at anything else or get a test meter out to prove that the earth was indeed connected!
It's a disgrace! Enough said

more tests should have been carried out before making a judgement, but then, why do you say it's in desperate needed of a rewire? did you IR test cables, circuits, etc.? how did you determine that the wiring needs replacing?

Was that in Birmingham? I've done that a few times. What I do is use a magical bit of test equipment, it's called 'experience'. It looks at the cable condition, judges it's age, looks to see what additions and alterations have been made, then it downloads the report straight to my head. If the report it gives is inconclusive I use the next peice of test gear in the armoury which is made by Fluke.

The combination of those two frequently save the customer a fortune because they don't have to pay someone to rewire the house when they only require a CU change.

This just sounds like a wind-up or the OP is trying to rip the customer off or he is not very experienced.
I don't do 'house bashing' and even I know that just cause a house has a 3036 fuse board that it doesnt automatically need a re-wire.

99% agree, the only thing i do differently is I use a Megger :cool4:

This has got me worried! there has been a rash of posts about this by that score does it mean that I need to replace my car because it needs an oil change?

No, you are ok for now, but you do have to change it if you dont have ALL of the below:
Intelligent Braking
Front Air bags
Side Air Bags
Traction Control
Electronic Stability Control
Lane & Attention Assistance
Blind Spot Monitoring

I have had this before where someone has ordered a rewire for old rewirable board as they toid the customer it was dangerous. IR was 24.9.. WTF would you say it needs a rewire off that.... TEST RESULTS?????????????????

People like you give sparks a bad name..

as I have said before its all about testing and the old phrase good for continued service, I was asked last week to give my opinion on an EICR. the spark had found the following "faults" main bonds to gas and water 6mm code 2, cu with 3036 fuses,code2 no rcd protection code 2 2 single sockets on a spur code 2. The installation was wired many years ago and although his IR readings were all well above and all equipment in good condition he felt the need to give everything he found a code 2.now given that this installation was wired a good few years ago it was never going to comply with 17th edition.imo either he didn't understand the regs (worrying) or was just out to make a fast buck.yes times are hard but that doesnt give people a license to rip people off.
