just real afaik

though the legislation does allow for a rival body to be set up, I don't think anyone has set one up

No / yes / No .....

If you don't deal with consumers, i.e. commercial only you don't have to be members of REAL, however you'd better discuss / explain it first with your MCS certifying body before any assesment, - in fact when REAL did their audit on use, they asked us why we were members as we didn't need to be (only commercial systems), our response - you never know...

At our MCS Audit he wanted to see our REAL memebership, and when I asked why, he then realised I wasn't necessary. (Showed it to him anyway) If you get a numpty assessor you may be in trouble.

The rules say you need to belong to an approved consumer protection body, the only one approved is REAL .. in THEORY any consumer protection body COULD put the procedures in place to offer an alternative / competitive service to REAL. None have (yet)

Last time I read about it in detail the Office of Fair Trading (!) had discontinued the process that would allow an alternative company to offer the service pending some internal review or reorganisation.

Yep that's about right - fair competition in the market place. One rule for them another rule for us.
