i need a light to illuminate a farm yard, i will be mounted on a shed approx 10M up, and needs to illuminate approx 300M² of yard.
there was a sodium lamp there, but it was poor quality, the plastic went brittle over 2 years and cracked where it mounts(probably from catcing the wind) and then let water in, which subsequently kept blowing the MCB.

so i am looking for an energy efficient one, with a photocell, that is tough and durable and preferably IP 66 minimum. whats the best thing on the market that meets my criteria?

thanks in advance

LED fittings and lamps have totally ridiculous price tag's on them, almost to the point of putting those interested in LED lighting off of them.. Which rather defeats the whole point of them.

The prices don't reflect the cost of producing them either, as they are cheaper to produce than CFM lamps, ....Fact!!!

With respect to LED lighting units.
It all comes down to “milk the market” while you can. The eco anoraks will chough up for them no matter what. “It saves X CO² units", the fact the manufacturing of them ***ks up the environment doesn’t matter. They’re in their nice warm glow of eco warm light.

Market forces will eventually rule as it has in most cases and drive the prices down.
But waiting doesn’t help our OP with the problem. That is going to be a case of sitting down with a load of price lists and specifications.

The other thing that stings, is that your actually buying older technology LEDs, they have more efficient LEDs that there keeping back, so to speak, to hit the public once again, keeping the prices for LEDs as high as they can!!

I'm no business man, but surely selling vastly more and consistently, at lower prices has got to be better than selling far fewer at over the top prices.... lol!!!

The one thing that people won't realise at the moment as well, is that yes the LEDs are mega expensive, however if the life is 25000 hrs or more, the cost of buying new lamps and maintenance costs, and the amount saved in energy use easily covers the cost of the lamp in some situations, i.e. commercial display lighting or industrial where the lamps are in use 24/7.

I would go for the metal halide as well, 2 could be a bit OTT depending what is being done in the area, i would believe the LED to be ok for low risk task lighting but the MH better for a busy working area.
