Hi all. I attended a job tonight where a plumber got a belt from an incoming cold water main. he cut it below the 10mm earth bond to tee off for a boiler.I am just wondering if there are any regs applying to the plumber cutting the pipe with regards to maintaining continuity. I know they have to connect an earth wire across the pipe when cutting gas pipes. does this also apply to water pipes and can anyone quote any regs that apply to this. thanks

manweb were there trying to suss it it out when I left. nothing wrong with customers electrics. they told me its definitely on their side or possibly from a neighbours house. only one cold tap in the house which comes in on the ground floor. 1m of pipe then the tap. looks to me like theres a problem with the neutral. there is arcing across the pipes even when main fuse is out.
fault coming up from a neighbours property perhaps

oh and long time no see...hows it going Chris?..

Nice to see you again Grimy.

One thing that was drummed in to me at the EMEB collage was to put a bonding jumper either side of a cut in a cable. This is often due to circulating currents in the system. The current will happily travel through gas or water pipes, not just the cables.

Many cable jointers got a belt for ignoring safe working practice. I would never remove the jumper until the joint was through bonded and ready to be sealed.

I never remove my jumper before June at the earliest.

It's cold up north.

Found this which applies to cutting underground service pipes outside of properties, From Water U.K;
Safe Working Procedure
1. Temporary Earth Safety Loops (TESL)

1.1 Before commencing any work on metal water services, the relevant section of pipework should be bridged with a “Temporary Earth Safety Loop” (TESL). The TESL should comprise a 6mm[SUP]2[/SUP] (minimum)insulated multi-strand cable fitted with insulated clamps. The procedures for attaching the TESLs are set out below and must be followed.

Wonder what this is supposed to achieve
